A Daring Poker Bluff We Should Seldom Do

A poker bluff is a good strategy to put opponents off balance in their play. Bluffs can make stronger hands than ours fold unwittingly.

But poker bluffs should not be regular features of our poker strategy. They should be used sparingly, or else sharp players would easily catch the routine and beat us without mercy.

A successful but near-miss poker bluff went like this. The person was a known loose player at the table and was popular for never daring an aggressive play except when holding something strong and solid like the nuts. The poker bluff this player tried was a multiple bluff that backed an all-in. The pot had $750 and this player took it all with a mere 7 and 4, unsuited at that, against a pocket QQ. Talk about adventurism.

The poker bluff went this way. It was a $2 to $5 no-limit table. After ten hands this player decided to change play with an offsuit 7 and 4 from the big blind. The button placed $60 pre-flop while 5 players limped in with $5. Without showing any sign of hesitation this bluffing player called which made everyone except the button fold. The flop showed K56 unsuited. With another poker bluff the bluffing player wagered $100 to see what the button really had.

The button frowned and delayed before calling. The bluffer placed the button on AK, AA, KK, QQ, or JJ, considering the pre-flop raise and the limpers. The turn showed 2. Another poker bluff of $200 came from the bluffer and the button was slow to call. After the flop, then the river with 10. The bluffer missed an open-ender yet decided an all-in of $450. The bluffer got the $750 pot.

The poker bluffs used were effective because of the former image the bluffer had---that of being formerly loose. The sudden change of play which the other players didn't see worked super for the poker bluffs. Moreover, the streaks were identified by the bluffer and played them well. Many poker player fail to identify streaks when they happen and fail to exploit them to the full.

But again, an offsuit 7 and 4 hand should not be always played this aggressively more so when playing from a poor position. In this case, it actually folded a pocket QQ, but this is more the exception than the rule.

And the rule is a poker bluff should seldom make up the main poker ingredient of a play strategy.
