What is Community Card Poker
Community card poker is somehow considered a bit laid back version of poker, mainly because the game itself is played mostly in homes and in some small time gatherings as form of entertainment.
However, during the course of time, the modern poker and its version Texas Hold'em have taken over the lime light. What could have shaped the modern poker game could probably be well derived from the small time community card poker which is now not as popular as it used to be.
During the Second World War, the modern poker games used community cards were cards are dealt face up and placed at the center of the table and commonly shared by all players. Each player is dealt with incomplete hand or hole cards privately, and the community cards complete the hand. A set of community cards is referred to as the board or window. The board/window could be dealt in a line or arranged in a certain pattern.
Today, Texas Hold'em is probably the descendant of community card game that could have originated during the 1920's. Though Texas Hold'em as everyone knows today has more extensive following than the aged community card game because it is a low limit game and has not much appeal to the regular gambler.
Typical home games use antes, while in casinos and other gaming stations only use blinds. It is most common to see fixed limit games, whereas in home games spread limits are more common. Stud poker on the other hand has a higher limit in the later rounds than with earlier betting rounds. The player on the left side of the dealer makes the first bet. If blinds are used, the betting round begins with the player after the big blind. Generally speaking, community cards are placing or positional games.
Playing with a low limit hand value in a community card game is not quite common. However playing community card games go well with high-low split since the probability of winning both halves of a pot is more likely to occur. In a high-low split play, a minimum hand requirement is needed.
Community card poker may have slipped into the shadows of its predecessors such as the modern poker and Texas Hold'em. But its important contribution in the world of gambling proved to be beneficial to poker's endless following. Small time or not, community poker had evolved and lasted for many years in the homes of those who knew the game and continued patronizing it.
